One person was killed and eight others were injured after shots rang out at a Halloween party in Indianapolis Sunday morning.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received reports of a shooting during a large party on the northeast side of the city just after midnight Sunday.
When officers arrived at the commercial building, they saw a large group of young people fleeing the area and discovered nine people between the ages of 16 and 22 had been shot, FOX59 reported.
One woman who was shot died at the scene, police said. The other young shooting victims were expected to recover from their injuries.
Multiple guns were recovered from the scene by police, who said a large group of teens and young adults were attending a party in the area just before the shooting began.
Several people have been detained, but no arrests have been made.
Public Information Officer Samone Burris told the outlet the overnight violence was another horrific reminder that children need support from their community.
“Our children need us. And this, tonight, is another example of why it’s important for us to have conversations with our youth and just continue to educate them about gun violence, about settling disputes, and just how to have a good time and go home safely,” Burris said.
Authorities have not identified the person who died.
Police are still investigating what led to the shooting, and how many people opened fire.
