When The Gilded Age Season 2 premieres on HBO and Max tonight, it will whisk viewers back in time to 1883, an era in which super wealthy Americans battled over opera houses and it was imperative to have a “cottage” (that was actually a mansion) in Newport. In The Gilded Age Season 2, showrunner Julian Fellowes outdoes himself again, giving fans more glitz, more glamour, and more ginormous plot twists that we saw in Season 1. How much longer will you have to wait to return to The Gilded Age? And how many weeks will you get to enjoy the opulence of this incredibly lavish HBO show?

The Gilded Age was created by Downton Abbey maestro Julian Fellowes and follows a pretty similar formula to that popular riff on the “Upstairs, Downstairs” genre of historic drama. The Gilded Age focuses on two very different households sharing the same Manhattan block. On one side of the street, the Brook/van Rhijn clan epitomizes the values of “old money” New York, with widowed matriarch Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) lording over her spinster sister Ada (Cynthia Nixon), orphaned niece Marian (Louisa Jacobson), and itinerate son Oscar (Blake Ritson) with a steely gaze. On the other, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) has funneled her robber baron husband George’s (Morgan Spector) fortunes into transforming her “new money” family into key movers and shakers of society.

The Gilded Age Season 2 will tackle the drama of the opera wars, the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, the rise of labor movements, and even Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute. More importantly, it will feature brilliant performers sniping at each other while wearing insane period costumes. Here’s everything you need to know about the return of The Gilded Age to HBO and Max…
